STAGE 1
CoachingNovember 13 to 29, 2023
Coaching:
Up to 10 longlisted applicants will receive coaching and technical support from domain experts to refine their solutions and develop prototypes. The challenge organizers will do their best to match all of the longlisted submissions with potential real-life use cases.
During Stage 1, the applicants will be offered:
- Mandatory M4D Onboarding Bootcamp: One week bootcamp between November 20 - 24, 2023 to enhance the understanding of responsible AI practices and ethical considerations, as well as, improving the participants business model and deliverables.
- Self-assessment with fAIr LAC S3 tool: Developed by IDB Lab, this self-assessment tool is designed to allow the mitigation of ethical risks associated with the use/application of new technologies.
- One-on-one coaching: Teams will also be coupled with an expert from one of the sponsoring organizations on the platform with whom they can message and set up a coaching call of maximum 45mins (further calls may be organized based on the coaches' availability).
M4D ONBOARDING BOOTCAMP SCHEDULE (November 20 - 24, 2023)
Deliverables:
Based on the received feedback and inputs, participants will submit their revised and improved proposals via the platform by November 29, 2023. These deliverables include:
- Improved “Pitch deck ” : A max. 10-slide presentation with (i) idea and value proposition; (ii) details on the underpinning technology and data inputs, (iii) explanation of the solution; (iv) details on how to maintain the product in the long run; (v) who are the key partners involved in this project; (vi) why should M4D partners and invest in pilot testing this solution. Please provide the presentation in PDF format.
- Video Pitch (maximum of 3 minutes)
- Improved Prototype or wireframe of the proposed solution (optional but preferred), which may be submitted as an URL to the solution, video, or PDF format.
- Results of the Self-assessment with fAIr LAC S3 tool - Upload the generated self-assessment report in PDF format.
Out of the longlisted solutions, up to 5 teams will be selected to proceed to the final pitching day. The finalist teams will be announced on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

STAGE 2
PitchingJanuary 17, 2024
Up to 5 finalists will present their solutions prototypes at a dedicated virtual Pitching Event, where they will have the opportunity to showcase their solutions to a broader audience, including potential investors.
Following an assessment process, the winning solutions will be selected based on their potential for impact, scalability, and alignment with the challenge objectives (see the full list of pre-set selection criteria below under ‘Selection Criteria’).
-
STAGE 3
Seed Funding & Support2024
Up to three (3) selected solutions will receive seed funding up to USD 50,000 (each) and get a chance to be assessed to be included in the financing pipeline of sponsoring organizations to support the possible implementation and scaling up of their AI-driven solution. The challenge organizers will provide ongoing support, including technical guidance, partnerships, and access to relevant networks to maximize the solution's impact.
Funding of the selected teams will follow the rules, regulations and processes of the funding and supporting entity and/or entities, as applicable.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The projects will be assessed following the criteria below. Each of the criterion will be graded using scale from 1 to 10 (10=Excellent, 1=Poor). The weights of the scores (as percentages) for each criterion are indicated in the criterion headers.
-
Innovation & Potential for impact (20%) - The extent to which the solution provides an innovation in the given context and can contribute to improving climate resilience in rural areas.
-
Viability and Feasibility (25%) - The viability and feasibility of the technological solution from a technical, economic, and social context to be scaled-up. Business model sustainability. The extent to which the proposed scope and budget is realistic and accounts for unknown.
-
Team (25%) - The extent to which the team demonstrates proven track record to implement similar solutions. Would this team be an ideal long-term partner to the M4D members? Female-led and gender diverse teams receive extra two grades for this criterion.
-
Market potential - Scalability & Replicability potential in other regions (10%) - The extent to which the proposed solution can be scaled up within a given context and how well it can be replicated in other regions of the world. Is the problem addressed by the solution a common problem in the other parts of the world? Could the proposed solution be adapted in other contexts?
-
Technology Readiness Level (TRL) (10%) - TRL 6 System/sub-system model or prototype demonstration in an operational environment or above. The extent to which the underpinning machine learning algorithms are sound, the ability of the AI solution to connect to a variety of data sources, the flexibility of the AI solution to handle the given context, and how well the AI solution accounts for ethical biases, as well as does the AI adhere to principles of transparency, accountability, data privacy, and fairness. The extent to which the solution has an appealing, user-friendly and intuitive design.
-
Diversity and Inclusivity in solution design (10%) - The extent to which the solution is designed with a mindful consideration of diversity and inclusivity, with a particular consideration for women, youth, and indigenous communities. Does the proposal incorporate a deep understanding of the diverse needs, perspectives, and contributions of all community members in their innovative AI applications and strategies?
